There is really no point in the flickr advanced search to find images free to use. Because, as you say, you can't trust a third party (the one who uploaded the image) on the copyright status of the image... especially as there's no guarantee he's the original owner.

The issue of public domain is of interest to me as I advise people on how to find and use public domain material. But the fact that there is so much of reproduction around - and much of it with varied quality of notification about copyright status - makes it very difficult for the novice.

Thanks so much for your very informative post and for mentioning pingnews. I'm sure the conversation will continue and I am available if anyone wishes thoughts or advice -- or simply wants to share ideas.

We've now also created a number of pools for original as well as some public domain material: pingnews (the rule for this pool is everything should be free/share alike), "democracy in action," "matters of justice," "space for all", "making history," "creative license," "global weather," "war and peace," and "world families."

Among the images that have been posted are photos taken by soldiers in Iraq, photographers in the Middle-East, journalists, amateurs who travel the world, etc. It is remarkable what is out there both in terms of quantity and quality. I've used some of these images myself in documentary work for television -- and it is just getting easier so long as people follow the suggestions that you and others are providing. The direct link to pingnews on flickr is: http://www.flickr.com/photos/pingnews/ I should add that we also have downloadable though more limited broadcast quality video available on google video. If the demand increases, we will be posting more.

cheers
Thanks again!
